Description

With fairly simple program requirements, the design challenge for this pavilion is to find a suitable language that is familiar and appropriate to its context and yet able to create a strong civic presence, elevating the pavilion beyond its utilitarian functions.

From a distance the pavilion seems familiar and at ease with its surroundings. The silhouette is reminiscent of the slowly disappearing farm buildings of our landscape. As we approach the pavilion our familiarity and preconception is challenged. The raised walls at the corner of the pavilion reveal a transparent skin that visually connects the site from North to South. The glazed corners welcome you to engage with the interior space, and frame the outside view for the visitors inside. The design of the pavilion shifts between the familiar utilitarian shelter with all its associations and the unfamiliar sculptural capricious form that captures our attention and encourages our imagination to engage.

The building is anchored with two mostly solid wings along its east-west axis, the washrooms being on the east and the concessions on the west. A glazed storefront system connects the two wings and forms the Winter warm-up/Café seating/Multi-purpose area.
