Description

The vastness of our country and the extremes of our climate have contributed to the nomadic nature of Canadians. The migration of animal populations, the way of life of our Native peoples, and the frequent moves of city dwellers are all reflections of a nomadic culture. This culture involves cyclic displacements, re-enactments of territorial appropriation, the construction of temporary dwellings. Nomadism creates a ritual in which architecture acquires a temporal dimension.

Video reaffirms the temporal nature of the nomadic ritual and records in language-time. It witnesses our actions and our ideas, providing a context for, preserving, and altering our environments. An inevitable step in the temporal appropriation of a new space is the appropriation of its virtual landscape. In Nomad's Land the video camera takes possession of the physical and temporal space of the site by means of its own archetypes (or video types): the lens of the camera, the images on the screen, and the memory of the video tape. Acting as a marker or reference point, the camera-witness initiates the project. The camera planted in the ground marks the territory, the framing of the lens demarcates the site, and what the camera sees becomes the pavilion's visual landscape. As a witness to the present moment, the camera becomes the eye scanning the horizon. The screen captures this moment, giving a live presentation of the images seen by the camera-witness. The pavilion comes into view and presents itself. But each new image supersedes the previous image: the screen becomes an eternal forgetting of previous moments. The shelter, like the video tape, protects and secretively reveals memory. It displays physical representations in the boxes of a three-dimensional structure. Then, on a floor of video monitors, it unveils re-presentations of the ritual of construction that was captured by the camera-witness. The screen presents and the shelter protects. The virtual memory of the monitors, the physical memory of the boxes, and the eternal forgetting of the screen exist simultaneously.
