Description

Culture Infrastructure
Northern Ontario School of Architecture

The project describes a series of ribbons:
a street
a garden
a school

These ribbons carve a new path through the downtown grid linking the main commercial centre and the main public green space. They intermingle as they run through the city core creating between them a variety of spatial conditions that meet the programmatic needs of a new cultural institution, the Northern Ontario School of Architecture.

One distinctive aspect of the proposed school's extended formal arrangement is how it will encourage the formation of new connections. One can imagine new and existing buildings establishing links to and growing from this new ‘culture infrastructure'. The proposed typology extends the building's capacity to engage the city and influence future growth and densification.

Ils tracent un nouveau chemin a travers la grille du centre-ville liant le centre commercial principal et l'espace vert public principal. Ils s'entrelacent et ils entremêlent en tant qu'ils coupent à travers le noyau de ville, établissant entre eux les conditions spatiales multiformes qui répondent aux besoins spécifiques d'un nouvel établissement culturel, le Northern Ontario School of Architecture.

Un aspect distinct de l'arrangement formel prolongé est comment il favorise la formation de nouveaux raccordements. C'est facile a imaginer de bâtiments nouveaux et existants former des liens à et se developer de cette nouvelle ‘infrastructure culture '. La typologie elle-même prolonge la capacité du bâtiment d'engager la ville et promouver son influence programmatique.

Captions:
Retail and exhibition spaces at ground level will run along a unique pedestrian-only street and public plaza.

An attractive alternative to big-box shopping, this new pedestrian street will draw activity and culture back to the city core.

‘Culture infrastructure' promotes further densification of the existing urban fabric, a sustainable alternative to urban sprawl.

A student presence downtown will add a new vitality to the city. The proximity of studio and street lends a sense of security to the new pedestrian link even after-hours.

Green spaces integrated throughout the project beautify the city centre and improve environmental quality.

Increased street frontage and multi-level circulation invite public access and use in all seasonal conditions.
