Description

Introduction:

The proposal for the new Northern Ontario School of Architecture takes after the precedent of the First Nation Longhouse. The Longhouse was a common housing type used by the indigenous First Nation people of Ontario. In creating a new school of architecture in a downtown setting, the primary design goals were first, to spark development of a downtown area with a new satellite campus for Laurentian University; second, to connect into the existing urban fabric of the city in a sustainable manner; third, to design with passive sustainability strategies; and fourth were to create a sense of community among the building occupants and overall public with the revival of the Longhouse building type that was commonly used among the First Nation People of Northern Ontario.

Development:
The development plan for the downtown area is to design a new downtown satellite campus to Laurentian University. The new campus would include the new Northern Ontario School of Architecture (NOSOA) and the proposed site for the law school (NOSOL), which the university also plans to build. The purpose in designing the new downtown campus is that the large number of students in would attract new business and spark future growth in the region. As part of the development plans, there consist of 3 phases that are stated as follows:

Phase One, 1 Year - Construction of NOSOA, underground parking, and a mixed-use facility on Minto Street (across the street from the Sudbury Arena)

Phase Two, 5 Years - Construction of NOSOL, and mixed use buildings near the southwest corner of Brady and Shaughnessys streets

Phase Three, 10 Years - Completion of downtown campus with construction of student dormitory and recreational center
