Description

A human and nature centered design helps revitalize the underutilized viaduct site. A new urban fabric, rich in diverse programs, reconnects urban life with processes of sustainable industry and agriculture. Typical urban programs integrate into the urban agriculture spaces to create a well-balanced urban ecology that is layered over the existing transportation infrastructure.

Project Goals
Currently, the viaducts and the surrounding lots cater (almost exclusively) to the automobile. The prioritization of the automobile hinders all other urban movement. This project seeks to reclaim the land for people and nature. The extensive southern exposure of the site provides ideal conditions for plant growth, indoor and outdoor cultivation spaces are maximized and interwoven with a variety of other programs; this hybridized, urban agriculture centre integrates into ordinary urban programs to create a diverse urban ecology.

Design Challenge
In order to reclaim the viaduct region and maintain the majority of the existing transportation infrastructure, new people centric programs are layered over the existing urban fabric. The new elevated pedestrian zone acts as a bridge over the viaduct ‘barrier'. This elevated urban fabric enables the site to realign with the city grid; the fabric is extruded to create block-size forms that house a wide spectrum of new programs.
