Description

Concept

The site at York Street and Queens Quay Boulevard West provides a unique opportunity for a design intervention which not only makes use of an unconventional building site, but allows for the
development of a functional space that enhances the existing community. The addition of an urban market and organic cafe on the site will serve the current residents and business people of the area
while transforming a mundane through-space into a purposeful destination. Surrounded by summer-time attractions such as Harbourfront Center and amidst the busy Toronto Waterfront, the new
Queens Quay Market will become a year-round feature.

Produce will be grown indoors and available for sale while nursery plants can also be purchased. Planting classes can also be incorporated into a program of activities, initiating community involvement
and socialization, as well as hands-on experience for the many condominium residents in the neighbourhood. The organic cafe on the premises will additionally operate with the help of the produce grown on site, a concept that is currently not available in the existing neighbourhood. Constructed primarily from locally salvaged timber and lumber materials, the undulating form of the Queens Quay Market enclosure encompasses the site and becomes an iconic feature of the Toronto Waterfront area.

Additionally, the central open space which is currently a completely sodded area will be transformed by a vibrant collection of gardens and seating arrangements which will enhance the visual appeal of the site and define it as a more enjoyable and functional gathering space rather than simply a through-space. Here, individuals can socialize, relax under the shade of the site's mature trees, and observe this new outdoor oasis at the heart of Toronto's Waterfront community.

Jury Report

KG: Good use of under utilized space while being programmatically completely believable. The sliding of the marketplace under the highway as well as a fluid
geometry connected to how people would use and feel the space makes this design without doubt the most powerful idea for the site and for serving the
Waterfront community. The idea of a market under a highway is very plausible and usable. With the number of condos in this neighbourhood, this space would
definitely be an attractor.

PH: The success of the design is in the viability of the program with an interesting site plan and a great use of an under utilized space. Overall, this design exhibits
the most appropriate idea.
