LIVING COASTLINE

The Eastern Seaboard, a strip where movement has always sculpted landscapes, now finds itself at a crossroads in its history. Dominated by automobile transit, this area bears the traces of a past rich in river-related practices, but also the scars of a modernity that has privileged speed over life.

At a time when ecological challenges are forcing us to rethink our relationship with the world, this project is a bold response to a fundamental question:

what if we gave coastal space the same value we once gave to freeways?

Our vision for the Eastern Seaboard is of a space where movement once again becomes synonymous with life, where daily commutes mingle with exploration and discovery. Where go-getters, strollers and explorers all find their way, guided by curiosity and respect for this natural and human heritage.

"Villosities" (folded biological membranes), our guiding principle, aim to increase the surface area of contact between river and land, encouraging a multitude of interactions.

By shaping a sinuous coastline, we increase the contact surface between river and land. By increasing the width of the transition between the constantly submerged riverbed and the permanently dry upper reaches, a succession of continuous strata is created. These strata are rich in vegetation, diverse ecological environments and varied human uses.

Purely human uses (facilities, housing, rear neighborhoods) are safe on higher ground, protected from exceptional flooding. The embankments of the freeway ramps offer a variety of visual links with the St. Lawrence. Conversely, reserved and inaccessible natural environments are protected by the rhythm of the tides and daily or occasional flooding.

Between these two types of spaces with opposing needs (nature/human), the project weaves a gradient rich in varied interactions. These in-between spaces are made accessible by proposing a hierarchy of 3 types of paths through the villosities, from the most direct to the most exploratory.

The plant typologies also follow this logic. They are adapted to the different strata, paths and uses, and form a gradient from urban to fluvial.

Finally, the project enhances regional transportation and access to the river for the northern districts of Beauport. East-west transit between neighborhoods is handled by boulevard Sainte-Anne or autoroute Félix-Leclerc. The railroad offers an alternative for commuters and tourists travelling between Old Quebec and Montmorency Falls, and even beyond. The stations are located on the existing transverse routes between the northern districts and the river, reinforcing and requalifying their link.

In short, this project is a manifesto for a future in which Littoral Est becomes a model of coexistence between man and nature, at the heart of the river's movement.
