THE ECOUMENE SHORE
The notion of the ecumene, seen as humanity's imprint on the Earth, addresses the dynamics between human beings and nature that are at the heart of the current ecological crisis. Inherited from indigenous sages, this perspective sees humans not as the epicenter of existence, but rather as one element among others in the complex weave of life on Earth. Nonetheless, humans possess cognitive capacities of their own that enable them to choose their impact on other living beings. We can either distance ourselves from these beings, domesticate them or seek to establish a symbiotic relationship.
It is in this context that The Ecoumene Shore reveals itself as a living echo of this third path, symbiosis. The project is rooted in a number of strong movements aimed at bringing people closer to living species.
The busy shoreline
Confronting years in which natural territory was sacrificed on the altar of automobile mobility, the project calls for the gradual replacement of a portion of the Dufferin-Montmorency autoroute with a lively river esplanade. The initiative aims to re-establish a connection between the river and the city, while promoting the regeneration of ecosystems. This conversion marks a profound commitment to ecology and collective well-being by offering new spaces for living, relaxing and contemplating along the water's edge.
The urban boulevard
Parallel to these changes, the Sainte-Anne axis is at the heart of a project to transform it into an urban boulevard, now connected to the freeway. This transformation is part of a vision of sustainable mobility, incorporating electrified public transit and infrastructure for active travel. The urban boulevard will create better links between the Port of Quebec and the Montmorency Falls, while also helping to activate exchange points in downtown Beauport and the historic town center. Carried out in phases, these interventions allow new mobility practices to gradually take hold, offering a built landscape that evolves with its occupants.
The garden path
The garden path, like a guide along the riverbanks, is shaped by the installation of rest areas. These stations include gardens, public artworks and architectural pavilions designed to offer a cultural program reflecting the zeitgeist. Associated with a biennial cultural event, these modular spaces enable an evolving dialogue in the public square.
The central element of these points of interest is an emblematic building designed as a genuine meeting place. Its forms will be defined through the major design principles of indigenous architecture, with choices based on climate, vernacular technologies, economy, social organization, spirituality and history. Imagined as an organic structure that extends a route to a new summit, this building will be the result of a collaborative effort to integrate diverse narratives.
The Ecoumene Shore, like a dance stage bearing witness to the times we live in and the times we've lived through, is a reflection of our hopes for the Eastern Shore of Quebec City.
