The Lemniscate Aquatic Center
This revision of the CEPSUM aquatic center is, through its form and function, grounded in ergonomic experience. Fundamentally designed with modular setups in mind, this lemniscate-like pool provides a near identical square footage to that of the old Olympic pool to provide equal opportunities for anyone who wants to use this space: athlete or otherwise. Complete with many gradual ramps, universal signage, anti-slip decking, and a loose art deco finish, this new design is sure to be an all-encompassing centerpiece of CEPSUM.
This new design breaks the mold of a longstanding rigidity in standard pool design to make the space come alive. Guided by the modern need for accessibility and an understanding of the impact aquatic spaces can have on a community, the pool area has now become more of a community center. Flanked by two recreational pools on either side and joined by small connecting "rivers" at all four corners, the central pool, acting as a 25m Olympic pool, can be converted into just about anything for any needs: water polo, diving, general swimming competitions, or even something as simple as a space to throw a party!
In envisioning the unorthodox shape of this pool, proportioning immediately became the greatest challenge to overcome. Given an already shallow distance to work with for the decking of the regular pools, a solution was going to be needed to bridge the gaps between all these areas. That solution came in the form of the ramping system; by providing access to the rest of the pool with an interconnected system of ramps at the edge of the main pool area, it allows for everyone to come and go as they please with little fatigue and worry. It provides the additional benefit of giving fantastic views of the vast room holding it all together!
