Public Datum:
A Place Of Social Serendipity

The animated datum makes a place of human presence coplanar toe ground dominated by vehicular traffic. Its elevated relationship to the street establishes a hierarchical expansion of the ground plane vertically. The idea here is not to sever the relationship between pubic space and street but rather to establish one given existing suburban conditions resembling a sea of cars floating on asphalt. The resulting solution is to create new sensory experiences by introducing free flexible spaces that can accommodate almost any sort of public recreational or learning activities visible from almost any line of sight. A visual connection is established: whether viewed by a person looking out the win¬dow of a moving bus to catch visual blurs of human activity through street facing glazing, or a teenager in a jujutsu class peeking into a senior's yoga class through glass partitions. The clash of different activities and diverse people ultimately provides potential for vibrant gathering, learning, and association.

A pier like steel structure preserves existing parking spots that service Guildford Mall. Prefabricated elements and composite panels allow for fast erection and dismantling. This ephemeral strategy enables potential for use of recyclable or cradle-to-cradle materials and structural members while also allowing for re-development without wasteful demolition. Chromium finishes are applied on soffits and ceiling finishes to reflect views of the interior to passersby on the street. Light fixtures are installed onto steel column webs between flanges which in turn are hired with translucent glass. Light weight tapered monocoque elements allow cantilevered forms and a maximized glazed facade that conceals the structure with a slim outline free of mullions.
