Description

The Coronation

Organic footprint grew over centuries of reconstructions. Its entrance obscured and kept secret by the surrounding buildings. An academic institution that reaches out to the community. That is its architecture, glorified.

The service towers extract support functions from the existing building. reducing it to mere floor spaces_ The old monastery becomes an empty she11 that adapts to the ever changing needs of the society. It can be rearranged to fit the needs of the architecture school of today rather titan the monastery of yesteryears.

Quality of education cannot be compromised by the building's lack of adaptability. It must address today's needs in order to sustain its position as a prestigious architecture school. Addition of a new building will only degrade the old monastery into a pathological monument with its value only measured by its past. The idea of adaptive reuse must reflect the needs of today with inevitable compromises to the stones and mortars of the part. Instead of introducing a new building that creates a new place, we propose to propel the existing architecture from its past to the present and beyond.

The compromise of the roof is a compromise made to preserve the introverted character of the existing architecture_ made possible by the new and flexible floor spaces. The new roof is an answer to the questions that propel the architecture school to the future. The resulting roof space functions as a primary public venue that is the jewel of the community, able to host multiple exhibitions and events simultaneously. The juxtaposition of old and new structures strike interest to the cite plaza. making its presence more prominent to the public without creating a new entrance. Its transparency clarifies its sense of place, making the institution more integrated into the cite and the culture of Quebec.

Education of architecture is an age old debate. Such debate itself should be incorporated into the agenda because it is as complex as the definition of architecture itself. A house of architectural education needs to reflect the requisite for open discussion, and any specific schema must not be imposed by a designer himself It needs to be flexible and generic in nature so that future architects have a place to develop their own ideology in the context of free plan and natural light.
