Description

Louise Basin is located immediately north of the area of Quebec City which may be considered the cradle of French civilization in North America. The designers of this submission were inspired by the historical significance of the environs of Place Royale, Place d'Armes and La Citadelle and have attempted to create strongly contextual scheme for Louise Basin. At the same time, the varied nature of the site in terms of its waterfront, harbour and industrial characteristics has also been paid close attention.

Building Forms and Themes
The scale and character of the building types are derived from the strong surrounding parameters and influences. In general terms, the building forms step in scale from the south shore areas where the 2-1/2 to 3 ½ story buildings reflect the adjacent historical environs of the old town, to the highest form grain elevators and other large scale building complexes at the north and west sectors.

While recognizing context in the built form, we wished to avoid creating copies of the existing architecture for the south shore area. While the forms are reminiscent of the old building stock they are also expressed in a more contemporary idiom indicative of current building costs, materials and practice. Some of the methods used to achieve this goal include using brick veneer instead of stone: substituting standing seam metal roofs and/or asphalt shingles for copper or slate, and treating facades with contemporary architectural details. Streets which are tightly defined by indigenous row housing forms arranged in somewhat irregular patterns will help establish a gallic ambience.

The public market has been designed to be highly compatible with the south shore housing area in terms of scale, materials, and details, it also expresses a waterfront industrial character. The form is linear in response to the configuration of the site and reminiscent of pier warehouse building types commonly found along the harbours of many major northeastern cities. The introduction of roof skylights and double volumes spaces with hanging mobilies will yield a light open feeling and a contemporary flavour to this structure.
