Description

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE CENTENNIAL PARK AND VILLA

"The site: a vast lawn domed into a flattened dome ... The house is a box in the air ... in the middle of meadows overlooking the orchard ... the plan is pure ...It has its rightful place in the agrarian landscape of Poissy ... The inhabitants, who came here because this agrarian countryside was beautiful with its country life, will contemplate it, kept intact, from the top of their hanging garden or from the four sides of their long windows. Their domestic life will be inserted into a Virgilian dream."

From Palladio to Le Corbusier, via the Victorian era and the Dutch villas of mid-century American architects, the villa typology has accommodated the dreams and ambitions of several generations of architects and owners, more often than not quite wealthy. In a setting that was both romantic and idealizing, daily life in an idyllic countryside in communion with nature was at the heart of this dream, along with a certain desire to assert prestige and social success at the same time. The Centennial villa, whose renovation was not necessarily a success, and which was soon to be demolished, was no exception to this logic, in which the attempt was made to integrate domestic life with a certain ideal as well as a certain bourgeois posture. The starting point for this architectural proposal is a questioning and reinterpretation of the Centennial Villa and Park, and the ideals and social, cultural and architectural history that underpin it. Assuming that the villas of yesteryear reflected a certain elitism and the social inequities that necessarily accompany it, how can we today design an open, democratic, sustainable and caring project that in turn reflects our contemporary values while integrating the memory and history of the site? The answer is developed on several fronts, which together form the present project.
