A PATH FOR ALL
A Path for All is an architectural proposal aimed at making universal accessibility a reality in the context of access to the CEPSUM swimming pool. A variety of multisensory signage strategies are used to provide a user experience that reflects the diverse ways in which users interact with space. In addition, a reorganization of the interior space creates a more direct accessible sequence between the reception area, the changing rooms, and the pool.
Our approach was guided by the principle of multisensory signage to communicate essential information to everyone. Various signage strategies were incorporated, such as Braille for the blind, contrasting floor markings for the visually impaired, textured and non-slip flooring to guide the canes of the blind and prevent the risk of falls for the elderly, text panels with contrasts to facilitate reading by the visually impaired and colorblind, pictograms for the illiterate, and flashing light panels for the deaf to indicate changes in swimming lanes and fires. All of this was done while maintaining UdeM's DNA in the colors and pictograms created.
The principle of redesigning spaces to create a route that requires as little movement as possible also guided the spatial solution for the new proposed route, which is designed to be minimally invasive and almost invisible, while constituting a fundamental change in the way all users can now access the pool. The direct and short nature of the route makes it easier for people with reduced mobility to access the pool independently and with dignity. Starting from the reception area, users can take the stairs or elevator to the secure turnstile area leading to the redesigned changing rooms in the central strip, which open directly onto the pool, all on a continuous, universally accessible sequential floor plan.
(From competitor's text)
This proposal introduces few changes to the existing layout: the main addition is a corridor to access the changing rooms, complemented by a blue line of signage. Overall, the jury found that the proposal has limited impact in improving the user experience.
