Description

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), Canada's national housing agency, was established in 1946 under the National Housing Act. The CMHC was mandated "to promote the construction of new houses, the repair and modernization of existing houses, and the improvement of housing and living conditions generally".

The launch of the "Healthy Housing Design Competition" in 1991 invited both the private and public sectors to develop more environmentally friendly forms of housing. The aim is to create new approaches to the design, construction and operation of housing without compromising the quality of the environment. In doing so, the CMHC is challenging housing professionals to define new approaches to human habitation that balance the needs of occupants with the principles of sustainability.

Each team was able to present its project in one of the following three categories: a new detached house in the suburbs, a renovated old house, or a housing that meets the needs of urban densification. These three categories represent the major forms of housing in Canada today and have different parameters within which sustainable housing principles can be applied. Each team had four months to organize and refine their concepts.
