Description

The Maison de la Culture will constitute a major attraction pole halfway between the soon to be developed old port and the other tourist elements along the sea-river axis. It will become the gateway to the heart of downtown Matane.

The volumetry of the building is of maritime inspiration. It derives from the programmatic requirements, the location of the parking lot, the slope of the land, the angles of view, the sunlight. It draws in a natural way the "arms that open" and draw the public towards the heart of the building. The layout of the building creates outdoor spaces sheltered from the wind and sun.

The accesses are grouped around a covered pedestrian street that crosses the building from Promenade des Capitaines to Rue Saint-Jérôme, thus facilitating circulation.

On the lower level, the lobby opens onto the river and gives access to the exhibition rooms. The library is located on the upper level to take advantage of a better visibility on the sea-river axis.

The clock that overhangs the building acts as the signal element of the Maison de la Culture. It symbolizes a lookout... a sailor posted at the bow of the ship to watch the horizon...
