Description

This proposal addresses the cities real need for daycare facilities and promotion of en-vironmental stewardship in young children. Through the appropriation of the European concept of a ‘wood daycare' children are exposed to the relatively un-manicured nature and wildlife of Stanley Park. Entering the milieu of Stanley Park requires a reconciliation of the expanded human presence with the existing wildlife. This proposal enables injured animals to attach, share and benefit from this new built human infrastructure through the introduction of the program of an animal rehabilitation centre. The resulting interaction be¬tween humans and animals creates a social and cultural synthesis.

Our approach to sustainability was maximum use with minimal consumption. As such spac¬es were examined over a 24-hour period to determine opportunities for space sharing. Pro-grammatic need for site resources, such as daylight, wind, water and existing infrastructure informed space planning and orientation. Existing infrastructure (plumbing, ponds, minia¬ture train) were exploited as catalysts for site planning and design opportunity. For example, the outmoded attraction of the miniature train is utilized to transition children and animals from indoor to outdoor areas. The train tracks act as a physical separation while maintaining close spatial proximity between the two groups.

We propose a pixilated system to allow finite control and adaptability of the building facade. Thermal mass, solar gain, natural ventilation and privacy needs are considerations in determining each elevation's pixel composition. Edible living wall panels adjacent to the animal pens provide food for herbi¬vores and omnivores.

This proposal continues to search and find moments that enable children to experience a shared space with animals while maintaining the separation necessary for animal rehabilitation. Stanley Park is an infrastructure of reha¬bilitation for humans and animals. This project seeks to extend this relation¬ship through an expansion of the parks designed landscape in the form of a wood daycare and animal rehabilitation centre.
